Acts of Kindness

One of the most under valued and overlooked commodities that we have as human beings is kindness. Random acts can completely change another person’s day, week, month, life…. And it’s not always what you do, but also how you go about doing it. If a person knows that you took time out of your day specifically to help them it can become very infectious.

PAY IT FORWARD

Oxford dictionary defines paying it forward as ‘a response to a person’s kindness to oneself by being kind to someone else’. Although I have no way of factually proving my theory, I am convinced that random acts of kindness throughout history have vastly had a positive affect on the world in which we live.

“No man is an island, entire of itself…”  – John Donne

John may have had a deeper, more spiritual reason for penning these words, but the philosophical truth remains. Human beings do not thrive when isolated from each other. In fact, the species actually flourishes most when we are a part of  a supportive group of peers.

TIS BETTER TO GIVE

We’ve all been fortunate enough to be the recipient of kindness at different times in our life. It made us feel good. We were appreciative and greatful for the help. Especially those times that we’ve really been in a jam. But the most rewarding moments are those in which we have been able to be the benefactor.

Whether we’re helping an elderly person with their groceries, tutoring a child in reading or providing a family on hard times with a much needed hand up, it is inherent that we do for others. The act of service to others is as natural to us as stretching our limbs when we wake.

SMALL FISH, BIG POND

At times, many of us get caught up in the thinking that we are insignificant. That we are not impacting the world around us and in the bigger scheme of things we have very little control over our environment. This is false!!  We may not all be big fish but we can all make a splash!

Always remember that ultimately each and every one of us has the power to individually move the globe one act of kindness at a time.
